What makes a good cover photo for a book? It goes without saying that for a biography, the photo must be of the subject. This particular photo of Alex was taken by his wife Hilary Clark Cole, while they were out on a sailing adventure. It’s quintessential Alex, relaxed and doing what he loves. Sailing with a book in hand, reading, steering and enjoying the day. He is wearing his Tilley Hat of course. The Canadian flag proudly flutters behind him, reflecting that his story is truly a Canadian one.
So then… how does a great photo become the book cover? You find a talented friend, like Debbie Johnston, who can throw together all the important elements of a book cover and make it into something beautiful and meaningful. The map in the background (and the airplane in the top right corner) indicates Alex’s penchant for travel and the fact that his clothing was made for not only sailing and the outdoors but also for travel. The map is of Canada, indicating his homeland. If you look closely, you’ll notice on the bottom right is part of Newfoundland, where his family has deep roots.
Later… about the back cover!
